Sept. 13-- EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI After suffering a car accident on the way to play Detroit Country Day School (DCDS) last October, the Yellowjackets dismantled a shaken EGR 6-0 in the State quarterfinal match. Saturday was shaping up to be an opportunity to exact a measure of revenge. However, the team from DCDS had other ideas. The Saturday match on Homecoming weekend was played under the sunshine of the a September day. And from the opening tap, the Lady Pioneers seemed to be caught on their heels. DCDS earned a corner within the first 2 minutes and the barrage kept coming through the first frame. All told, there were six defensive penalty corners that were taken against the girls from East Grand Rapids, with the team holding their defensive posture and preventing any damage in the quarter. After the first fifteen minutes, EGR sought to get their footing back and create their own offensive opportunities. In the second quarter, DCDS was able to find a crack in an otherwise stellar effort from Ellie Hilgendorf ('26), who put up 15 saves on the day. Unlucky in that singular moment proved to be the difference on the day as the Lady Yellow jackets took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break. The second half proved to be a much more even tilt as EGR had some forays into the offensive circle and ultimately producing two penalty corners in the fourth quarter. Both presented some good opportunities, but the DCDS defense staunchly held the line. After the final whistle, the disappointment with the result was evident, but the effort cannot be diminished as the Lady Pioneers played the number 5 team in the state to a relative stalemate. It bodes well going forward, as the girls from EGR will look to rebound on Wednesday, Sept. 17 in a rematch with OK Conference foe, Spring Lake in an effort to take a commanding lead in the race for the conference championship. Come see this match on Mehney Field at the EGR Middle School starting with JV at 5:30 and the Varsity game tipping off at 7:00 PM.
