Sept. 6-- EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI With all the activities going on in EGR on Saturday, it may have been easy to miss the dominant performance delivered by the Lady Pioneers field hockey team. However, the cheers were unmistakable and certainly reverberated across Reeds Lake. The Reeds Lake Triathlon provided a challenge for teams, players and spectators to get to the venue, but the easiest way may have been to simply follow the roar after each of the five goals scored in the first quarter. The scoring was opened even before most people had been able to buy a cup of coffee at the concession stand. The girls came out with an intensity not yet displayed in an opening quarter this year. The initial thrust resulted with the first score at the :33 second mark. Camilla Volovlek ('28) knocked home a pass that whispered through the Dearborn defense and left the cage exposed for a quick tap into the back of the net. After a dynamic pass from Addi Storrs ('26) to Toccoa Lepley ('29), Lepley turned the corner at the far right sideline and scooted along the baseline to make that pass for Volovlek's goal. Less than five minutes later, Peyton Astrauskas ('27) continued her torrid streak by netting another goal (on the heels of her hat trick at Hudsonville last Thursday night). Her dribbling skills we prominently on display as she worked herself free in traffic at the top of the circle and cracked home another goal. She also added an assist to her point total by participating on the next goal, by Avery Albers ('27), off of a set piece offensive penalty corner. Storrs also had a hand in making sure the ball got onto the right stick for the goal in the seventh minute. Albers continued the barrage by scoring on a penalty stroke awarded after a shot by Lillie Adamy ('26) was illegally stopped with a foot on the goal line by a defenseman. Albers calmly stepped up and buried the free shot into the upper left corner of the net. To finish the scoring in the quarter, Albers continued to be involved by sliding a pass to Mayi Prado ('26) in the circle and the exchange student from Spain banged her shot into the backboard for the fifth goal on the morning. The Lady Pioneers then pulled back and slowed the pace to ensure they had a chance to work on passing and movement as a unit. In the final three quarters they tallied a notch on the collective stick in each of the last three frames. With four minutes remaining in the first half, Kelly McMahon ('26), a Senior defenseman, scored the second goal of her hockey career in as many games. She redirected a shot from Tess Bombery ('28) to catch the goalie out of position to make the stop. Bombery got in on the goal action with four minutes remaining in the third quarter by slamming a shot from the middle of the circle home off of a feed from Farzona Urmonjonova ('26). And finally, at the thirteen minute mark of the fourth quarter, the mercy rule was reached as Prado scored her second goal of the contest by precisely placing a shot from the right side of the circle past the goalie into the left corner of the net. This 8-0 win came quickly and allowed the girls to work on some of their strategy in moving the ball away from opponents while maintaining pressure on the defense of the opposition to keep up with the ball movement. Among the many activities, the 2nd Annual EGR Field Hockey Food Truck Face-Off featured two of the best in West Michigan. This fundraiser pitted 616 Kabob Stop versus the Airborne Burritos offerings. Based on the voting from those who tasted the fares offered, 616 Kabob Stop was awarded the trophy. We encourage everyone to give these two food trucks a try, because their delicious support of EGR Field Hockey did not disappoint on this Saturday afternoon. It is certainly a hope that this event will grow and people will come to future events for the food and the hockey. Mr. Matt Harold was the Teacher of the Match and joined the team on the sidelines with his daughters Kate and Emma leading the cheers in the huddle. Come root on your EGR Lady Pioneers as they face off against their OK Conference foes from Rockford. This match features the 6th (Rockford) and 9th ranked teams in the state and could give the winner a leg up on the race in this year's OK Conference championship. The game will start at 7 PM on Tuesday, Sept. 9 on Mehney Field. Let's dial in and turn it up on the Lady Rams!
