Aug. 21-- Lady Pioneers Get Pierced in First Game by C-K Archers in Opening Field Hockey Clash The 2025 EGR Field Hockey season began with a intense tilt between two teams with post-season aspirations. The Lady Pioneers and Cranbrook-Kingwood both have the talent and desire to make a serious impact on the State tournament that is the first sanctioned through the MHSAA. This back and forth game finally got some scoring, but rather than coming from the home team, it was the visitors who tallied, not one but two goals in the latter stages of the second quarter. However, EGR was unphased and roared back with a tally by Addi Storrs ('26) with her first goal of the year just eleven seconds before the halftime break. The Lady Pioneers carried that momentum into the second half by equalizing with a goal by Avery Albers ('27) off of a set piece offensive penalty corner. Less than four minutes later Storrs knocked home her second of the game to help the Lady Pioneers take a 3-2 lead going into the fourth quarter. The Archers did not back down and early in the final stanza found the backboards. With the game now knotted at 3-3, East could not get immediately back into their strategy and it provided an opening that the Archers did not miss as they took the lead with 7:30 left. The teams battled back and forth, but, unfortunately, the girls from East could not find their way to draw even. In addition to her goal, Albers provided an assist. Peyton Astrauskas ('27) had two assists and Camilla Volovlek ('28) contributed an assist as well. It was a tough loss, but realizing it was the first game of the season, there is clear evidence of the potential this team presents going forward this season. Ms. Wende Johnson, the Athletics Department assistant, was honored at halftime as the Faculty of the Match as selected by the EGR Field Hockey program. The student-athletes on the team wanted to recognize her for the hard work she does in making sure everything is possible for this team to be on the field.
